Description

If you're looking for an easy win with big views, the Laughlin Loop Trail loop from Brushy Peak Regional Park is exactly that. This easy 2.1-mile (3.4 km) hiking route packs in 350 feet (107 metres) of elevation gain over about 1 hour, making it perfect for a quick escape with rewarding scenery.

What to expect on Laughlin Loop Trail loop from Brushy Peak Regional Park

As you traverse the Laughlin Loop, you'll find yourself on primarily dirt and grassy paths, winding through open hillsides. The views quickly open up to expansive vistas of the Livermore Valley and the distinctive windmill-capped hilltops of the Altamont Pass wind farm. While it's an easy hike, be prepared for sun exposure as shade is minimal, and after rain, some sections can get muddy. It's a great option for anyone wanting to stretch their legs and soak in the scenery without committing to a long, strenuous day.

Planning your visit

The trailhead is conveniently located at the Laughlin Ranch Staging Area, which offers parking and restrooms. Be aware that the trail can get very hot, dry, and dusty in summer and fall due to minimal shade, so bring plenty of water. Spring is an ideal time to visit, when the hills are green and wildflowers like purple lupin and yellow-orange fiddlenecks are in bloom.
