St. Peter's Church Kortessem

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sint-Pieterskerk is the parish church of Kortessem and is located at Kerkplein No. 1.
Story
A church was first mentioned in the 11th century. A Romanesque nave was built between 1026 and 1038. The Romanesque west tower dates from the second half of the 12th century. An early Gothic choir and transept were added in 1270-1272.
In 1225 the church became a collegiate church.
The church has suffered a lot of violence. In 1468 it was sacked by the troops of Charles the Bold. In 1490 it was set on fire by the gangs of Jehannot-le-Bâtard. William of Orange's troops also caused destruction in 1568. Looting also occurred later, including by French troops.
The restoration took place in 1870-1875 under the direction of Herman Jaminé, during which the side aisles were enlarged in the neo-Romanesque style using old materials.

The fall of water, small and large, still has a great attraction. Here you can enjoy it. Take your time and sit down at the water's edge.

The artwork #inconcreto is not only a tourist attraction, but also a lookout point. #inconcreto is a concrete head of over four meters high and slightly less wide. This landscape artwork by Frits Jeuris is about the contrast between abstract and concrete. A place that encourages reflection and fresh ideas. From the top of the concrete giant head you look out over the surroundings.

Hardelingstraat Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

On the site where a lordly manor stood in the Middle Ages, the castle of Hardelingen was built in the 19th century. The site had continuous habitation from an early date and was closely linked for centuries to agricultural exploitation in the fertile valley of the Werm. As a lordly manor, the domain functioned not only as a residence but also as an economic center that managed and structured the surrounding land within the traditional Haspengouw agricultural landscape.
Today, the castle of Hardelingen, located in the quiet village of Werm, represents a valuable example of the transformation of a medieval lordly manor into a stately 19th-century country residence. The castle and its surrounding park landscape strikingly illustrate the neoclassical ideals of order, harmony, and scenic beauty, thus occupying a special place within the heritage of Haspengouw.

Schalkhoven Castle

Highlight • Castle

Schalkhoven Castle is a castle, located at Schalkhovenstraat 1 and 2 in Schalkhoven, between Schalkhoven and Sint-Huibrechts-Hern.

Not part of the seigniory of Schalkhoven, it was built in 1588 by Rijkaard van Elderen, as a manor farm. It consists of the actual castle, which is actually a compact manor house flanked by turrets, and a U-shaped farmstead located behind the castle.

In the 18th century the castle had a French garden, in the 19th century a landscape park was created to the north of the castle. In this park there are some old trees and there is a pond that is connected to the Oudebeek. Furthermore, the castle is mainly surrounded by arable land.

The castle was adapted in the Louis XVI style at the end of the 18th century, with strict symmetry being implemented. Today it is painted yellow.

The farm has well preserved its 17th-century core. This complex contains barns, stables and a house. It was regularly renovated in the 19th century.

The owners included the Van Elderen, Vaes (from 1607), Van Eyll (from 1665), De Heusch (18th century), Barthels (from 1776), Du Vivier and De Borman (from 1836) families.
