Mill 't Vliegend Hert

Highlight • Monument

The post windmill of Brielle has a special history. During a restoration of the Brielle ramparts in 1973, two large lumps of stone were found. These turned out to be dice (foundation) of the standard mill that had stood here in the 17th century.

The Stone Beacon

Highlight • Monument

A lighthouse was indispensable for the ships that wanted to visit Brielle. The 'Stenen Baak' was therefore built in 1633 on the remains of the original 13th century baak. On top of the beacon tower there was still an open wooden construction with a tent roof, in which the coastal fire was fired. In front of the beacon is a ball annealing furnace that was part of an 18th century defensive work. They made bullets so red-hot that they could, like a kind of incendiary bombs, set fire to enemy ships. Above the oven you will see a grid on which the balls were placed. The oak beams visible on the outside, connected by rod anchors, served to prevent the masonry from expanding during firing. At the foot of the Stenenbaak, the wall of the defense work is still recognizable.
