KOERS Museum of Cycling

Highlight • Monument

Flanders is course and course is Flanders. And the cradle? It is located in Roeselare. Odiel Defraeye was the first Belgian to win the Tour in 1912 and world champions from Roeselare – think of Benoni Beheyt, Patrick Sercu, Jean-Pierre Monseré, Freddy Maertens – are plentiful. You immediately understand why KOERS. Museum of Cycling in Roeselare.

Since September 2018, KOERS has been more than just a museum. It has an integrated tourist reception with a cycling shop and an extensive documentation center for researchers. With lockers, electric charging points and shower rooms, it is the ideal base for recreational and sporty cyclists. In the newly landscaped museum garden, which connects to the cycling junction network, you will find the cycling café that has been appropriately named 'KOERSkaffee'.

StreetArt by Djoels "Wortel"

Highlight • Monument

Beautiful work by an upcoming artist. This is what she says about herself:

"I was born on March 31, 1992 in Izegem but grew up in Meulebeke. I graduated from KTA Roeselare as a letterer in publicity.

When I was 7 I already knew I wanted to be a tattoo artist, preferably with a specialization in portraits. At the age of 9 I was introduced to graffiti. For years I strived to achieve my goals and also fully believed that this would work!

Driven, eager to learn and with my goals in mind, I strived to achieve perfection. I was able to start tattooing at the age of 19, after which I soon opened my own shop. in 2017 I obtained the title ink master, masters of the low countries, named after the TV program of the same name.

My shop is located in Egem, a sub-municipality of Pittem, where I can give free rein to my creativity."

Roeselare Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

Roeselare opted for a completely new town hall, where sustainability is an important principle, with which they claim the title of "most sustainable town hall in Flanders".
For example, a 70% reduction in energy costs is expected, extensive rainwater recovery has been opted for, the building will be fully heated with energy generated by the local incinerator, ... and 99.5% of the demolition material has been given a new purpose. .
The building is currently still hidden behind scaffolding and curtains, but it should be completed in 2024.
The second photo (which I took from the website of the city of Roeselare) shows what it should look like later.
So we will have to come back again :-)

Grauwzusters Convent

Highlight • Religious Site

The text on the now-legible monument preservation sign reads:
"Behind the late Gothic stepped gable was originally the inn De Gouden Leeuw (The Golden Lion).
The sisters purchased this building in 1683 and moved in in 1685. The inn was gradually transformed into a convent. Several original elements, however, such as the sculpted staircase, were preserved and integrated into the convent.

Protected in 1951."

"Gray Sisters" were devout women who lived according to the third rule of St. Francis (which he wrote in 1223). Their founding example was Elisabeth of Thuringia, who, despite all opposition, continued to support the poor and sick during the famine of 1226.

Unlike regular monastic orders, which were centrally governed from the outset, Gray Sisters sprang up here and there in independent foundations. They did not take formal monastic vows.
