View of Lake Attersee

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Attersee is a lake in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut in the Vöcklabruck district and lies at 469 m above sea level. A. The course of the Attersee is the Ager, which drains over the Traun into the Danube. The nutrient-poor lake with its diverse banks offers habitats for many animal and plant species and has been designated as a Natura 2000 area since 2006. With over 46 km² of water, it is the largest lake entirely in Austria. At 169 meters, it is the third deepest lake in Austria and, with a water volume of almost 4 billion cubic meters, exceeds many of the larger lakes in terms of area. The Attersee, owned by the Austrian Federal Forests, is an important tourist destination in Upper Austria and a popular swimming lake as well as a diving and sailing area. On the shores of the Attersee there are remains of Neolithic pile dwellings that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps.

In summer, there are many cyclists and also many drivers on the main road around Lake Attersee. The level of mutual acceptance sometimes leaves something to be desired. It is best to cycle early in the morning or outside of rush hour. Between Seewalchen and Nussdorf, you can also take the R2 cycle path. There is no traffic there and the view is much better.

Head south when you spend your holiday in Unterach am Attersee. The village at the southern end of Lake Attersee used to be called "Little Venice". Today Unterach am Attersee impresses with a wonderful mixture of the imposing villas from the turn of the century and its village character.
