The original castle was built in the 13th century and expanded several times. King Ludwig II of Bavaria planned another magnificent castle here, similar to Neuschwanstein, but it never got past the planning stage.

The ruins offer a spectacular panoramic view of the Allgäu Alps and the landscape. A challenging journey, but very worthwhile.

Falkenstein Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

Ruins already have their charm. But when they stand spectacularly on a mountain and offer an unobstructed all-round view – amazing. We had beautiful light in the late afternoon and a great view. You can't get enough of the sights: royal castles, the Ostallgäu lake district, endless mountains, valleys, the Vils and more.

And afterwards you can still stop off very well below and continue to enjoy the view with delicious food and drink.

Falkenstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

The ruin of the castle lies at 1268 meters on the Falkenstein near Pfronten. And the nice thing is: you can pedal up a wonderfully steep road with the road bike. Alone that's worth it and arrived at the top there are plenty of extras. The view, for example, which is really great. By the way, you can look at how King Ludwig II of Bavaria once resided here, if you have a bit of imagination, because much of his former home is not left. Maybe it helps, if you know, that King Ludwig originally wanted a castle in the style of Neuschwanstein. Too bad that he never got to see the finished structure: Long before its completion drowned King Ludwig in Lake Starnberg.
