Description

What to expect on View of Sylvan Island – Sylvan Island Ruins loop from Moline

As you cycle the route, you'll find the terrain surprisingly varied, moving from smooth, 6-foot wide crushed limestone paths to sections with concrete rubble and brick. The island's rocky soil means it dries quickly after rain, often making it one of the first places to ride in the Quad Cities. You'll pass through dense forests and open meadows, catching glimpses of the Mississippi River and Sylvan Slough. The most striking feature is the blend of nature reclaiming the land around the abandoned industrial ruins of the former Republic Steel plant, which operated here until the 1950s. While the overall physical rating is easy, some parts can be technical, so be prepared for a mix of surfaces.

Planning your visit

This urban trail system is conveniently located near downtown Moline, offering a quick and accessible getaway. While there is a 1.2-mile multi-use trail with a crushed limestone surface suitable for most bikes, be aware that many of the island's dirt trails are designed for mountain biking and may be unsuitable for typical touring bikes with narrow tires. The island's quick-drying nature makes it a reliable spot to ride even after precipitation.
