Description
If you're looking for a rewarding and accessible Adirondack experience, the Long Pond loop from Paul Smiths is a fantastic choice. This moderate hiking route covers 6.0 miles (9.7 km) with 331 feet (101 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 2 hours and 34 minutes to complete. It's an ideal trek for families or anyone seeking a scenic, relatively easy day out by the water.
What to expect on Long Pond loop from Paul Smiths
As you embark on this journey, you'll traverse mixed wood forests, predominantly conifers, with a shady forest floor rich in plants like Goldthread and Partridgeberry. The trail offers lovely views of the 14-acre Long Pond, known for its native heritage brook trout, and continues to Black Pond. While generally considered an easy trek, be prepared for sections that can be narrow and rough, especially on the eastern side of Black Pond where you'll encounter plenty of ups and downs through dark hemlock timber. Hiking boots are definitely recommended to navigate the varied terrain, making it suitable for active families and those who appreciate diverse forest and pond scenery.
Planning your visit
The Long Pond loop is part of the Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) network, which generally means well-maintained trails and clear access. Parking is available at the VIC trailhead. This trail is particularly beautiful during fall foliage season, but it also transforms into a snowshoe trail in winter, offering year-round enjoyment. Always check local conditions before heading out, especially for seasonal changes.
