Barnard Castle Bridge

This medieval stone bridge spanning the River Tees serves as a vital link between the towns of Barnard Castle and Startforth.

Dating back to the 14th century, this historical structure, overseen by the commanding presence of the castle, has been known as "County Bridge" due to its former role as the boundary between County Durham and Yorkshire.

Enduring the tests of time, the bridge underwent repairs in 1596 and saw the restoration of its parapets following the Great Flood of 1771.

Barnard Castle ruins

The castle was built by the Normans shortly after the conquest of the region, but experienced the greatest importance under Bernard de Bailleul in the second half of the twelfth century. The castle remained in the possession of the Balliol family, whose most famous and important member John Balliol was King of Scotland. A later owner was Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick. His daughter Anne Neville inherited it to her second husband, the future King Richard III. After his death in 1485, the castle fell into disrepair.

Best coffee I have had on my many rides around the Pennines. Very balanced blend with chocolatey taste. Very strong without being acidic. Leagues ahead of the watered down fare available at Costa's or what the typical Rington blends widely available in the area provide. Owner very friendly and provided a breakfast for me, even though the kitchen wasn't open yet.
