Hochelten Barefoot Trail & Outdoor Fitness Area

Highlight • Trail

The Hochelten barefoot season starts every year at Easter. A two kilometer long hiking trail leads over 12 different surfaces through the Hocheltener Forest, around an orchard meadow and back again. Without shoes you get on your soles and walk alternately over gravel, sand, bark or forest floor. The feet are happy about this sheer pleasure.

Start and finish is the Sebastian-Kneipp-Platz Hochelten. The Kneipp step and arm pool round off the experience of nature in a meaningful way. The balancing fields and outdoor sports equipment are available to sporty guests. On the dangle benches you can not only relax your legs, but also your soul. Lockers are available to store your shoes (€ 1) and a foot washing facility allows them to be cleaned afterwards. The use of the Hochelten barefoot path including all equipment is completely free of charge. The opening times are from early April to late October, from sunrise to sunset. So out of your shoes and into fun.

During World War I, this land fortification was supposed to protect the Ruhr area. It was built back in 1922. Bunkers were blown up, the trenches are still clearly visible throughout the area today.

Remains of Blown-Up Bunker (World War I)

Highlight • Historical Site

Here you can see the remains of an old bunker that was blown up during the Second World War. The remains have been overgrown by nature. The place has a mysterious somewhat spooky atmosphere.

Hulzenberg Lookout Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the Hulzenberg lookout tower you have an amazing view of the area. The tower itself is 21 meters high, but once you are at the top you are almost 100 meters above NAP.

Rest bench with a view of the small pond - nice or just a mud pit depending on the water level.

An atmospheric path away from the main paths. There is also a small stream and if you like photography, you can take beautiful atmospheric pictures here.
