Entrance to Mylau Castle

Highlight • Castle

A fairly steep, cobbled path leading up to the castle. If it has rained or snowed, the pavement is very slippery.

Mylau Castle

Highlight • Castle

Mylau Castle has its origins in the 12th century, from which the stately keep and the two square towers also come. Up until the end of the 18th century, first noble families and later merchants lived in the complex. Then a factory was housed in the walls. Today you can visit a museum here.

Mylau Castle

Highlight • Castle

Mylau Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in all of Saxony. Its history is very exciting, because the castle was already a noble seat, factory and town hall with a castle tavern. For several decades it has been primarily known as a museum.

Around the middle of the 19th century, three textile printing plants were set up in Mylau, which in the beginning mainly worked as contract printing plants. The companies Heinrich Chevalier, Carl Baust and Traugott Ferdinand Meißner processed local cotton and wool fabrics in different processes, the deliveries of the end products went "all over the world". The year 1877 brought a turning point when, due to a slump in sales between May and August, production came to a complete standstill and wages were reduced by 10%.

All three companies were located on Göltzsch, between Wehrgasse and Mühlgasse, below "Turkey". Today nothing is left of the formerly important companies in Mylau, the buildings were demolished in the second half of the 20th century.
