Regnitz and Lower Wiesent Valley Bird Protection Area

What is a bird protection area?
The "Regnitztal and unteres Wiesenttal" bird protection area
has a total area of approx. 1634 ha. The protected area
is part of the European protected area network "Natura
2000" and consists of FFH (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) and
Bird Protection Areas (SPA).

Why is the SPA area so valuable?
The bird protection area is composed of nationally significant
floodplain landscapes as well as wetlands and forest areas.
Due to these structures, the protected area has supra-regional
importance as a breeding and resting area for various bird
species.

The "Regnitztal" (6332-471.01) is the largest, contiguous
single area of the protected area with 705 ha. The
recreational area "Anger- und Ausee" also belongs to the
"Regnitztal". The area offers ideal conditions for ground-nesting
bird species in particular for foraging and represents an
important habitat. Characteristic bird species for the area are
above all lapwings, snipes and skylarks, but also shore dwellers
such as the bluethroat or the kingfisher occur. Not only birds
find ideal conditions, but also the beaver.

Here on the Main-Danube Canal, we look out over the Regnitz meadows and across to the foothills of Franconian Switzerland.

A bit of "Franconian Tuscany" too.

Angersee Baiersdorf

Highlight • Lake

Not far from Erlangen in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district lies the Baiersdorfer Weiher (also called Angersee), a popular bathing water. There are spacious sunbathing areas on the west bank. Sanitary facilities are available.
The bathing lake does not have a lifeguard, but is checked at regular intervals. The water quality is also excellent.
Grilling is only permitted in the designated areas. Open fire, camping and bringing dogs with you are prohibited at the Baiersdorfer Weiher.
Some sections of the bank in the north of the Baiersdorfer Weiher are approved for nudism and nude bathing.

Ausee

Highlight • Lake

The Ausee is also known as the Baiersdorf bathing lake. As the name suggests, you can jump into the water and refresh yourself here in summer. The shores of the lake are overgrown with trees, giving it that idyllic look. Between the trees you will always find small stretches of beach that lead gently into the water - ideal for lying on the grass and enjoying nature by the lake.

Due to the shallow entry into the water, the lake is particularly popular with families. There is also a nudist area on the north-west shore area for those who like to go swimming without anything.

Rubbish bins and mobile toilets are available to keep the lake and shore nice and clean.
