Charlestown Harbour

Highlight • Historical Site

Charlestown is an unspoilt Georgian harbour used frequently as a filming location as it is so unchanged by time. It features in Poldark, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Eagle has Landed, Alice in Wonderland and the Three Musketeers to name a few.

The harbour was built between 1791 and 1801 to export copper and import coal but also ended up exporting china clay. Charlestown was named after Charles Rashleigh, a local entrepreneur who invested greatly in the area. It was previously known as West Polmear.

There is a cafe and two pubs in Charlestown plus a Shipwreck Treasure Museum.
