Highlight • Rest Area

Here at the refuge is the stamp stele W3 for the green belt pass. Quite inconspicuous between the two benches.

Goetheruh Stone Bench

Highlight • Monument

The place
To the north of the Goethe Tower are two small vantage points hidden in the forest. The larger one is called the Goetheruh. Whether Goethe rested here is not documented. But a lookout tower was built in his honor early on, which no longer stands today. In the run-up to the rather "loud" Goetheturm, the quiet counterpart to the much-visited Goetheturm was reactivated in 1999, a small, tranquil place.

The pillar
In order to increase this effect, the Scottish landscape artist Ian Hamilton Finlay created an object precisely for this location. It is a sandstone column that refers to Goethe's "Faust II". It contains a modified quotation from Goethe: "Arkadia, a kingdom in the neighborhood of Sparta". The column also has a very profane function: it serves as a bench for visitors. The artist wanted the column to appear as if it had "always been here in the forest".

Sachsenhausen Landwehr
The Goetheruh is located directly on the Sachsenhausen Landwehr. That's not just the name of the swath, it's an actual historical element. In 1393, the city council decided to build the Frankfurt Landwehr to protect the city area, especially the fields. The Sachsenhausen Landwehr was not completed until 1426/1429. A part of the Landwehr has been preserved here. It consists of two ditches. The larger ditch is now (about 100 m away from the Goetheruh) spanned by a bridge. The Landwehr also included an impenetrable hedge ("Gebück"), various culverts and control rooms, including the Sachsenhausen control room. Although inconspicuous, a unique and outstanding cultural monument in the history of the city has been preserved here.

Goetheruh

Highlight • Monument

A smaller lookout hill a little to the north in the forest near the Goetheturm is called Goetheruh. Whether Goethe really rested here is not proven. You can enjoy the tranquility, for example, on or on the sandstone column that the Scottish artist Ian Hamilton Finlay designed for this place. The inscription “Arcadia, a kingdom in Sparta's neighborhood” naturally comes from Goethe, from his “Faust”.

A very special facility in Frankfurt's city forest. From the tower there is a magnificent view in all directions. Thank God this tower has been rebuilt!
