Fort Boven-Lent

Highlight • Historical Site

Fort Boven-Lent or Sprokkelenburg is a fort on the north bank of the Waal east of the village of Lent. The fort was built in 1862. First of all to defend the city of Nijmegen and later to protect the railway bridge over the Waal. The fort consists of a building with casemates, a tower, a moat surrounded by a glaze.

Nijmegen was a fortress designated by the Dutch state. It was therefore forbidden to demolish the fortifications or build outside the fortifications because of the Kringenwet Nijmegen. This was to optimally protect the city and to have a free field of fire. After the introduction of the Fortress Act in 1874, Nijmegen was able to demolish its fortifications and expand the city, which was done systematically in Nijmegen. A railway bridge was also built, connecting Nijmegen to the Dutch railway network. Fort Boven-Lent therefore lost the function of defending the city of Nijmegen, but together with the Fortress Beneden Lent it was given the function of defending the strategically located railway bridge. During the First World War, the fort was manned, as in the beginning of the Second World War.

After the Second World War, ammunition and zinc pieces were stored in the fort, so that the dikes could be breached in the event of a possible Russian invasion. In 1959 it also lost its military function and was vacant for a while. Today the fort is used for catering.
