Pasture at Georgsteich

Highlight • Natural

The "Koppel am Georgsteich" including all planning, execution and funding is a project of the HGON (Hessian Society for Ornithology and Nature Conservation, AK Marburg-Biedenkopf) and the Willy Bauer Nature Conservation Foundation as landowner with the support of the district and the RP Gießen.
The project is not limited to the renaturation of a tributary to the Hatzbach. It is also about the conversion of arable land into extensive grassland and the use of the grassland as extensive cattle pasture. The project was financed by means of the equalization levy under nature conservation law and the initial measures were implemented in 2008.
Since the end of the construction work and some winter floods, the newly created creek in particular has developed dynamically. The step of the cattle supports this development. The erection of a permanent fence, which simplifies grazing in the somewhat remote area, will above all increase the safety for drivers on the nearby road.

A 7 km and a 12 km hiking trail "Around the Wetzstein" start at this hiking car park. Well marked on mostly solid paths, it leads through an intact forest. 3 shelters, lots of explanatory panels with historical background and beautiful nature actually make this trail a secret "extra tour". The upper source area of the Hatzbach is protected for good reason. There is a lot to see on this varied hiking trail, interesting stories and more rest areas / benches than we had food with us, and that was even though we were at the Speckswinkel and walked the Butterweg :-). More information is available on the hiking boards.

Georgsteich

Highlight • Lake

The idyllically located Georgsteich on the boundary with the municipality of Hatzbach was artificially created around 1712 when the nearby Wolfsmühle was built, because the Hatzbach did not have enough water to operate the mill. It got its name from the operator of the mill Georg Wolf. The mill stopped operating in the 1940s. Since then, the Georgsteich has been used as a fire fighting pond. It also offers a habitat for numerous water birds, amphibians and insects.

A nicely located rest area. A table and benches are available. This is where the borders of Mengsberg, Momberg and Wolferode come together.
