Passo del Biscia

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Passo del Biscia (Nattern Pass) is a very small pass at an altitude of 892 meters that connects the large Vara valley with the Ligurian coast.
Both sides of the pass are very scenic and near the top of the pass you have a wonderful view of the Tigullian Gulf. Unfortunately, the side into the Varatal (which flows south of La Spezia into the Ligurian Sea) is in a very bad condition, so that you can only recommend a ride on a racing bike from the Varatal to the coast with a clear conscience.
The long and very lonely driveway from the Vara valley runs very irregularly with short intermediate descents, while the side coming from the coast is two-lane and very regular over large parts. On this side there is a quarry, which brings some truck traffic with it and may explain the much better road condition.
At the top of the pass there are some very recommendable hikes that are also part of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri.
The descent by racing bike towards the coast is highly recommended: speedy and winding on a good surface all the way down to Lavagna or Chiavari.

San Pietro Vara Clock Tower

Highlight • Monument

The foundation of the town dates back to around the 14th century. In 1748 a conference was held there to discuss the armistice between the Austrians and the Franco-Spanish at the end of the War of the Austrian Succession. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, local religious brotherhoods guaranteed the influx of artistic works today preserved in the town's church and oratory.

Parish Church of Missano

Highlight • Religious Site

It is located on a hill at approximately 322 m above sea level. and the territory of the hamlet is made up of the steep terraces distributed along the provincial road 523 of Colle di Centocroci, which connects the Genoese valley of the Petronio stream with the middle Val di Vara in the province of La Spezia. A first mention of the church of the village of Missano can be found in the papal bull Officii nostri of Alexander III of 16 March 1162, where it is indicated as a possession of the Benedictine abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte (Camogli). Another document that commemorates the town is an act of territorial cession from 1189 by the Genoese consuls. The construction of what later, variously modified and enlarged, would become the local parish church also dates back to the 12th century. In the 17th century, the flourishing artisanal activity of the «corbari of that place inhabiting the church of Missano» is remembered: «The genesis of this activity, characteristic of the church of Missano and of the nearby Villa del Connio, was probably linked to the cultivation of the vine, the whose collection required the use of light, capacious and shoulder-carrying containers, of which the "corba" represents the most suitable model". «The corbari of Missano are baskets made with chestnut shoots, particularly flexible and resistant, therefore suitable for being woven and holding a heavy load. Today they are almost a museum object and it is surprising to think that there were different sizes: children, women, men up to 50 kilos in weight"
