Ghent is a compact city. All the sights are just a few minutes' walk from each other. Two tourist districts merge into one another. The historic center has the largest concentration of historical buildings and monuments, and the art district is home to the most important museums. Everything is within easy walking distance. Just stroll around. Of course, there are numerous inviting cafés and cozy restaurants in all districts.

The skyline of Ghent is dominated by 'the three towers', also known as the Ghent tower row: the 95-metre high belfry tower, the Saint Bavo Cathedral (originally the Saint John's Church) with the famous altarpiece The Mystic Lamb by Jan van Eyck and the Saint Nicholas Church. The Book Tower is a university library with study rooms and is a modernist building designed by Henry Van De Velde in the 1930s. The original furniture was also designed by him. The Book Tower is seen by many as the fourth tower of Ghent. In 2012, a new tower was inaugurated in Ghent, the Artevelde Tower in Sint-Denijs-Westrem. In March 2017, the new city library De Krook opened, a building with multiple functions.
