The Place de la Concorde is located at the foot of the Avenue des Champs-Elysées. It is distinguished today by the Louxor obelisk (dating from 3,300 years BC and erected in October 1836), by the prestigious hotels that border it and by the two monumental fountains ((Fontaine des Mers and Fontaine des Fleuves).

The Luxor Obelisk is an Egyptian monument more than 3,300 years old, erected in the center of the Place de la Concorde in Paris. This majestic obelisk, made of pink granite, is one of the two obelisks that stood at the entrance to the Temple of Luxor in Egypt. It was offered to France by the Viceroy of Egypt, Mehemet Ali, in 1830 as a sign of friendship between the two countries.

                Points of Interest:
                History and Origin:

The obelisk comes from the Temple of Luxor, where it was erected at the entrance as a symbol of power and pharaonic divinity. It dates from the reign of Ramses II, around 1250 BC.
The monument is approximately 23 meters high and weighs more than 220 tons. It is covered with hieroglyphs celebrating the exploits of the pharaoh Ramses II.
                Transportation and Installation:

The obelisk was gifted to France in 1830, and its transportation from Luxor to Paris was a feat of engineering. It took two years to transport it on a specially designed ship, the "Louxor", before being installed in 1836 in the center of the Place de la Concorde during the reign of Louis-Philippe.
The base of the obelisk features engravings illustrating the complex process of its transportation from Egypt to Paris.
                Symbolism and Position:

Located in the center of the largest square in Paris, the obelisk occupies a strategic position between the Champs-Élysées and the Jardin des Tuileries, connecting several key points of the city.
The obelisk replaces a statue of Louis XVI destroyed during the French Revolution and stands today as a symbol of international friendship and admiration for Egyptian civilization.

The main attraction on the Place de la Concorde is the 22-meter-high obelisk with a golden top that stands in the middle of the square. It was erected there in 1835 and replaced the Statue of Liberty that had been there since the revolution. The Luxor Obelisk is a gift from the Egyptian Viceroy Muhammad Ali Pasha to France. It was given as a thank you for the researcher Jean-François Champollion's achievements in translating hieroglyphs.

                      Golden Summit:

In 1998, a gilded bronze pyramidion was added to the top of the obelisk, replacing the missing original. This golden coating shines in the sun, giving a dazzling touch to the monument.

                      Place de la Concorde:

The Luxor Obelisk is at the heart of the Place de la Concorde, one of the most famous squares in Paris. Surrounded by two magnificent fountains inspired by the creations of Rome, the monument is at the center of a place rich in history, which was once the scene of executions during the French Revolution, including that of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette.

                      Why visit the Luxor Obelisk?

Egyptian Heritage: This thousand-year-old monument is a rare example of ancient Egyptian art in Europe, testifying to the architectural genius of the ancient Egyptians.

History and Symbolism: The obelisk, in the heart of Paris, tells the story of the relationship between France and Egypt and is part of an important historical context, including the French Revolution.

Central Site and Panoramas: Located on the Place de la Concorde, the obelisk offers a splendid view of the Champs-Élysées, the Seine, and several other emblematic Parisian monuments.

The Luxor Obelisk is a must-see monument, both for its historical and cultural value, as well as for its location in the heart of the French capital.

Unfortunately, the obelisk cannot be reached during the Olympics because there are sports venues all around it.

The Luxor Obelisk belonged to the Temple of Luxor, in ancient Thebes, Egypt. Viceroy Mehmet Ali donated it to France in 1828. The decision was made to place it at the very center of Paris's Place de la Concorde in 1836. Over time, it has become one of Paris's most prominent monuments, along with the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Élysées, and the Louvre. So much so that, in 1937, it was listed as a Historic Monument.
