The Louvre is housed in an originally medieval castle used by the kings of France. The first castle on this site was built around a keep. After the Templar Order fell from disgrace around 1307, the Louvre became the home of the royal treasury. The French King Charles V made the castle his royal palace. As a lover of art, he already gave the Louvre something of its future function. The palace suffered badly during the Hundred Years War and although Francis I insisted on rebuilding the palace, it wasn't until 1528 that something definite happened. In this year the keep of Philip II was demolished. Plans were developed to rebuild the castle in the prevailing Renaissance style, which happened in 1546. Catherine de' Medici had a new palace built in 1564 some 500 meters west of the Louvre, the Tuileries, and under Henry IV this palace was connected to the Louvre by a wing along the Seine, the core of today's Denon -wing. Henry IV's plan served as a guideline for all succeeding generations to expand and improve the Louvre. When Louis XIV decided to move his residence to the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre fell into disuse as a palace and took on several other functions. The Louvre now houses one of the largest museums in the world.

The Lourvre is the richest museum in the world and houses an enormous amount of art treasures. The outside of the building, with the large and small pyramids, is already a work of art in itself. If you want to visit the museum and really take time for the art, you should take into account that you need about 3 days to briefly walk past everything.
