During the 17th century, the two buildings of the Hôtel Dieu were connected by the Pont au Double. The toll, which benefited the hospital, was double denarius. The current work is from 1885.

The bridge was requested in 1515 by the owners of the neighboring Hôtel-Dieu hospital. More than as a communication work, its initial request was intended to solve housing problems by taking advantage of the custom of the time of building houses on bridges.

In the place existed already in the 17th century a primitive bridge, which was built in 1634 by the Hospital (Hôtel-Dieu), which stood there on the Île de la Cité. The site was cleared for the construction of a new bridge when Baron Haussmann relocated the Hôtel-Dieu in 1865 and demolished the old buildings.
