    Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, two folk heroes of the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302, are known far beyond the borders of Bruges. It should therefore come as no surprise that the two heroes were immortalized with a statue in 1887 on the Markt in Bruges.

      The statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, the two local folk heroes who played a major role in the Flemish resistance against the French king in 1302, resulting in the Battle of the Golden Spurs. The statue was erected in 1887, the period of historical romanticism. Due to the friction between the Flemish Breydel Committee and the French-speaking city council, the statue was inaugurated twice: on July 11, 1887 and between August 14 and 22, 1887.

          No one from Bruges is as famous as these two folk heroes who played a prominent role in the resistance during the Battle of the Golden Spurs (1302), when Flanders resisted French rule. They were rewarded with eternal fame and a statue in Bruges' most prestigious place, the Market Square.
          Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, two folk heroes of the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302, are known far beyond the borders of Bruges. They were also the heroes in the book "The Lion of Flanders" (1838) by Hendrik Conscience. No wonder, then, that the two heroes were immortalized with a statue in Bruges' Market Square in 1887. However, the creation of this image did not go smoothly. Due to tensions between the pro-Flemish Breydel Committee and the French-speaking Bruges City Council, the statue was even unveiled twice. The first time on 11 July 1887 in Flemish by the Breydel Commission; a second time on 15 August 1887, this time in French and in the presence of King Leopold II.

          The bronze statue of the two folk heroes is the work of Paul De Vigne, a sculptor from Ghent
