Since September 15, 1865, there has been a synagogue for the Jewish community in Elberfeld on Genügsamkeitsstraße, and since January 22, 1897 also in Barmen, there on Zur Scheuren. In 1930, both communities had around 3,000 members as part of the new city of Wuppertal, each had their own kindergarten and two old people's homes in Elberfeld. During the Reichspogromnacht 1938 both synagogues burned down and were completely destroyed, most of the Jewish citizens of Wuppertal were murdered under the rule of the National Socialists.

24 years later, on November 9, 1962, at the suggestion of the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation, memorial plaques were installed at both locations. Lord Mayor Dr Frowein, State Rabbi Dr Salomonowitsch, the chairman of the Jewish religious community, Rosentahl, and the chairman of the Jewish religious community in North Rhine-Westphalia, Dreyfuß, spoke on the occasion.

The sculptor Kurt Schwippert designed the memorial plaques, which were made by Eugen Busmann and Gerd Mauel. Both panels show the same inscription:

“Here stood the synagogue of the
Jewish community. you
was born on November 9, 1938
a victim of racial madness
The city of Wuppertal
November 9, 1962 ”

Since 1994, the Old Synagogue meeting place has been located on the site of the old Elberfeld Synagogue, "an extraordinary historical place of learning for children, young people and adults."

Since December 8, 2002, there is again a Bergische Synagoge on Gemarker Straße in the heart of Barmen, the construction of which was necessary after the Jewish community in Wuppertal had grown from 65 to over 2000 members since the end of the Cold War.
