Lock 100 is still active today for pleasure boats and canoes and is operated by hand. It also helps to regulate the water level in the left arm of the Regnitz. The idyllic lock keeper's house has also been preserved.

A particularly beautiful place in beautiful Bamberg. 👍

This connected the Danube near Kelheim with the Main near Bamberg over 172 km and had to overcome a height difference of almost 200 meters. Due to the almost simultaneous advent of the railway, the abundance of locks, the shallow water depth that limited tonnage and the laborious towing from the bank, the canal was not destined to be a long-term success, although it wrote an admirable piece of industrial history. It's really impressive to see this historic, fully functional lock in action!
During canoe trips, this lock is activated by hand. The passage takes a total of approx. 10-20 minutes - depending on the current water level and the muscle strength of the smuggler. 👍

The Ludwig-Danube-Main-Canal had to overcome a height difference of 264 meters between the Danube and the Main with 100 locks: 80 m with 32 locks from Kelheim up to the summit hold, 184 m from there with 68 more locks down to Bamberg.

Lock 100 is the last lock on the historic Ludwig Canal.

Lock 100 was built over 150 years ago as part of the canal construction and opened on July 15, 1846 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

The lock is still operated by a lock keeper by hand today, making it the last operational lock on the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal. In the lock, mainly sports boats are transported from the canal to the Regnitz and vice versa. In 2000 the lock gates were renewed. The technical data are briefly listed here:

Lifting height: 4 m

The lock system is located in one of the most attractive areas of Bamberg. During a walk through the idyllic Mühlenviertel, it can be viewed from the historic drawbridge.

An impressive monument to contemporary history and architecture. It's essentially identical in design to all the other locks on the canal. Anyone interested should follow the canal's course between Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz and Nuremberg. Parts of it are still very well preserved there.
