The weir regulates the water level of the Regnitz in the Bug area and stabilizes the water volume of the left arm of the Regnitz, which runs through historic Bamberg. High water is discharged via the weir into the right arm of the Regnitz, which shortly thereafter becomes the Main-Danube Canal.
