The street "Alter Graben" in Bamberg owes its name to its location: It once ran along the outer city moat of Bamberg's medieval fortifications, more specifically the fortification of St. Stephen's Immunity. This moat was gradually filled and built over.
Today, the "Alter Graben" is an inner-city street in the mountainous area of the historic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stretches from the Upper Stephansberg to the Upper Leinritt.
