The Basilius Chapel and the Ivo Chapel became the substructure of the Gothic upper chapel, the Chapel of the Holy Blood, which houses the relic of the Holy Blood, which is carried around in the Holy Blood Procession every year on Ascension Day. The Chapel of the Holy Blood was also originally Romanesque, but was renovated in the Gothic style in the 15th century. During the French Revolution, the upper chapel was largely destroyed and rebuilt in 1819-1839. It is now a showpiece of neo-Gothic decoration. Both chapels were elevated to the status of basilica in 1923 and contain many artifacts and a museum.

      Basilica of the Holy Blood

The Basilica of the Holy Blood consists of a lower chapel and an upper chapel.
The lower chapel, dedicated to Saint Basil, is a rare example of Romanesque architecture in the coastal region.
The soberly decorated prayer room is covered by stone ridge vaults resting on heavy pillars.
Above the entrance to the side aisle you will notice a remarkable half-relief depicting the Baptism of Christ (Tournai studio 12th century).
You reach the upper chapel via the Ter Steeghere staircase, with its reconstructed bluestone facade in a transition style from late Gothic to early Renaissance.
The relic of the Holy Blood, which is said to have been brought to Bruges by the Crusaders, is kept here in the Chapel of the Holy Blood.
The chapel was renovated in the Gothic style in the 15th century, but is especially important for its 19th century neo-Gothic decoration.
The church was elevated to a basilica in 1923, because of the special veneration of the Holy Blood.

The museum in the basilica illustrates the rich history of the Holy Blood Chapel and of the Holy Blood itself in various ways. The main eye-catcher is the reliquary of the Holy Blood, which was made in 1617 by the Bruges goldsmith Jan Crabbe from approximately 30 kg of gold and silver, enriched with more than 100 gemstones.

          Two-story church.
The Romanesque base impresses with its simplicity, while the upper church literally overwhelms with its pomp.

Basiliek van het Heilig Bloed (Basilica of the Holy Blood)
The double church, dedicated to Our Lady and Saint Basil in the 12th century and a basilica since 1923, consists of a lower church that has maintained its Romanesque character and a neo-Gothic upper church, in which the relic of the Holy Blood is preserved. The renovated treasury, with numerous valuable works of art, is also worth a visit.

A surprisingly beautiful and interesting basilica. From the outside you can't see at all what splendor can be seen in the building.

Believers can still venerate the relic at specific times (from 2 to 4 p.m., also in the morning on Fridays), a subdued event.

The Basilica of the Holy Blood was elevated to the rank of basilica in 1923 due to the special veneration of the Holy Blood. It consists of a lower and an upper church. The lower chapel is dedicated to Saint Basil and is a rare example of Romanesque architecture in the coastal region. The simply decorated prayer room is vaulted by stone ridge vaults on heavy pillars. Above the entrance to the side aisle you can see a remarkable half-relief depicting the Baptism of Christ (studio in Tournai, 12th century).

You reach the upper church via the "Ter Steeghere" staircase with a reconstructed bluestone façade in the transitional style from late Gothic to early Renaissance. The relic of the Holy Blood, which is said to have been brought to Bruges by the Crusaders, is kept here in the Chapel of the Holy Blood. The chapel was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 15th century, but is mainly important for its 19th century neo-Gothic interior.

The chapel also houses the Basilica Museum, a kind of treasury with numerous valuable works of art, mainly related to the veneration of the Holy Blood relic. Among other things, some valuable works of art are kept here that have been included in the list of Flemish masterpieces, such as the Great Holy Blood Shrine by the silversmith Jan Crabbe from 1614.

The history of the Holy Blood Basilica
In 1149, the knight Count Dietrich of Alsace was in the Holy Land and, according to his own account, found a small vessel in which, according to legend, there were a few drops of the blood of Jesus Christ. He brought the relic with him to Bruges and had the Holy Blood Church built there in memory of the crucifixion of Jesus, which was later elevated to a basilica. The basilica is a so-called double church. The older part was built as a Romanesque chapel, which was dedicated to Saint Blaise, and in the Middle Ages the upper part was added, which was built in the Gothic style. Today, both churches are connected by a steep spiral staircase.

The Basilica of the Holy Blood is one of the most visited places in Bruges because it houses an important relic: a small piece of cloth that contains the blood of Jesus. The relic is in a rock crystal jar, preserved in a cylinder with a gold crown at each end. It has an engraved date: MCCCLXXXVIII die III Maii, that is, May 3, 1388.
