The Frankenwaldschanze near Bad Steben was the last ski jumping hill in the Franconian Forest until it was closed in 2010 due to structural defects. Since then, ski jumping is no longer possible in the Franconian Forest. [2] The ski jump and the jump tower were blown up on March 27, 2015.
The ski jump was built in 1927 on a plot of land in the Bad Steben market near Carlsgrün. In its original form, jumps of up to 20 meters were possible. In 1952 the ski jump, which belonged to the Bad Steben winter sports club, was renovated. The dilapidated tower was demolished in 1968 and replaced by a new 21 meter high wooden tower in 1987. In 1994 it was covered with a mat. Since then the hill has mainly been used for summer ski jumping.
The hill record in winter with snow cover is 56.0 meters, set by Zdeněk Hnyk from Dukla Liberec. Greater widths were achieved with mats, including 61.5 meters by Lukáš Hlava on June 6, 1999 and June 4, 2000. Vladěna Pustková from the Czech Republic, set in 2004, holds the women's record with 60.0 meters. [3]
As a high-level event, an international night jumping event with world and Olympic champions from what was then Czechoslovakia took place in 1988. [3]
A renovation of the ski jump was uncertain because the owners association, the Bad Steben winter sports club, had dissolved at the beginning of 2012. [4]
With the decision of the municipal council of Bad Steben on November 3, 2014, the inrun should be blown up in 2014 with the support of the technical relief organization. The jump tower should remain as undamaged as possible so that it can be used for other purposes in the future.
