    The second largest and also one of the most famous caves in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The Hickel cave is a wide layered joint cave that is very typical of Saxon Switzerland and is formed by rainwater. The cave is 14 meters deep and 45 meters wide.

      The Hickel Cave is the second largest cave in Saxon Switzerland and a popular destination for hikers.

      The cave is located in the Thorwald walls, above the Großer Zschands south of the Zeughaus, in the hallway of the Sebnitz district of Ottendorf. Together with the cowshed, it is one of the most famous caves in Saxon Switzerland. With a depth of 12 to 14 m and a width of 45 m, the Hickelhöhle is a very wide layered joint cavity, which is designed as a half-cavity. These layered joint cavities, which are typical of Saxon Switzerland, are caused by rainwater seeping in from above at water-impermeable intermediate layers, the so-called layered joints. These are due to the layered deposition of clayey components during the sand deposits in the Chalk Sea. The large bench structure of the sandstone in the area of the Thorwald walls has contributed to the size of the cave.
