The single-nave, thatched building, constructed of fieldstone and brick, was built around 1240 as a simple church and houses several special art treasures, such as the group of apostles, the baptismal font, and an altar with an altarpiece. The neo-Romanesque bell tower was built in 1908.

Norddorf (in Öömrang "Noorsaarep") is, along with Süddorf ("Sössaarep"), the oldest of Amrum's villages. Both villages were first documented in 1464, but both were already settled in prehistoric and early historical times. In 1925, a major fire destroyed many houses in the historic village center. Since then, in contrast to Nebel or Süddorf, the villagescape has been dominated by newer houses without thatched roofs.

The Amrum Nature Center, run by Öömrang Ferian i.f., manages the island's protected area and operates a permanent natural history exhibition. Five saltwater aquariums and various stations introduce visitors to Amrum's natural environment. The sperm whale skeleton can be viewed at certain times.
