Less than 200 meters from the market square, the church of St. Nikolai towers up, its 34-meter-high church tower can be seen from afar. The church's origins probably date back to the time when Machern was first mentioned around 1121. The building reflects different stylistic periods: the late Gothic choir with its irregular star vault dates from 1430. The baroque church tower with two bells from 1492 was built around 1753.
