The 2,650 m long Elster Basin stretches west of Leipzig's old town from the Palmengarten weir (also: Upper Elster weir) to the Lower Elster weir in the Auenwald. It is 155 m wide, and the water level is between 104.4 m above sea level at the Palmengarten weir and 104.3 m above sea level at the Lower Elster weir. The basin is fed at its southern end via the Palmengarten weir from the water of the White Elster and the Elster flood bed. There are three outflows at the northern end of the basin: the Nahle begins on the left at the Nahle weir, the New Elster branches off from the basin on the right via the Lower Elster weir, while the largest amount of water normally flows out of the middle via the Luppe weir as the New Luppe. The Elster Basin, together with the White Elster, is a first-order river.
