...and suddenly, right by the path, lies the site, well-protected by a fence and barbed wire, where I spent two weeks with my school class over 40 years ago. For me, it was the highlight of the hike, and for anyone who doesn't remember it, it's probably nothing special.

The 🟣 PURPLE PATH 🟣 is a sculpture trail that connects Chemnitz, the 2025 Capital of Culture, with 38 towns and cities in the region. Numerous artists have contributed works of various kinds, telling an unknown story of the region. More information at https://chemnitz2025.de/purple-path/ Olaf Holzapfel "Two Woven into One Another" on the Dittersdorfer Höhe, Amtsberg Material: Timber-framed sculpture made of wood Size: 6 x 6 x 14 m "The conceptual artist Olaf Holzapfel, born in Dresden in 1967, places a sculptural-constructive work in the open landscape of the Dittersdorfer Höhe as a reminiscence of a childhood observation. External elements are evenly arranged like a protective mesh around an inner structure of rising square beams. The two interlocking structures are reminiscent of the wooden or steel towers that were erected precisely over marked reference points in the rugged landscape of Saxony and served as surveying stations in the Royal Saxon Triangulation network in the 18th century to map the kingdom. These stations, visible from afar, were designed to ensure that the areas were accessible to people and for other purposes." Technical instruments functioned separately, as the measurement results should be recorded as undisturbed as possible by heat, vibrations, or the weight of human bodies. As symbols of the ambivalent relationship between technology and nature, Holzapfel's work conveys the tenet of scientific objectivity, which detaches things from nature to the point where they become part of a sign system devised by humans. Paul Alsberg, the secret pioneer of philosophical anthropology, described this principle as the elimination of the body, a prerequisite for the intelligent use of technology in an environment perceived as hostile. The triangulation towers, which over the decades were also repurposed as transmission systems or antennas, have completely disappeared from today's Saxon landscape. Holzapfel erected his approximately 14-meter-high wooden tower on the Dittersdorfer Höhe in close proximity to a Royal Saxon triangulation column erected in 1869. With his work, he not only creates a memory of the technological revolution of previous generations, he also aware that from there we look into a cultural landscape surveyed and shaped by humans."
