The Salpa Line in Askola is part of Finland’s extensive WWII-era defence line, with preserved bunkers that are open to visitors in summer or by request at other times. The site includes original concrete structures and trenches, giving a glimpse into wartime history. You can explore the area independently or join a guided tour for more context. The surroundings are forested with some uneven paths, so trekking or cross bikes are recommended. Bring good footwear if you plan to explore the bunkers on foot, as the terrain can be rough and damp in places.

Ylämaa Church, located in the former municipality of Ylämaa (now part of Lappeenranta), was completed in 1931 based on designs by Ilmari Launis. It features detailed interior paintings and engraved glass windows by Antti Salmenlinna, and an altar painting by Väinö Saikko. The church also houses 1940s organs built by Kangasala’s renowned organ factory and a baptismal font made from local Ylämaa spectrolite. Outside, visitors can see a war memorial by sculptor Mikko Hovi. The church sits in a quiet village surrounded by forest roads ideal for trekking or cross bikes, though the terrain can be slightly hilly.

Taavetti Fortress in Luumäki is a well-preserved 18th-century bastion fortress, originally built to defend Russian territory near the Swedish border. Its strategic location at a road junction made it an important military site, and today it offers a mix of history and recreation. Cyclists can explore the area freely via marked routes or follow a frisbee golf course that winds through the fortress grounds. In summer, it's worth timing your visit with events like Vallijamit or the local village market. The terrain is mostly flat and grassy.

pretty good bike path mostly next to the former highway, a section in the middle follows the motorway instead (and nope, not the least bit peaceful in general), nice views of lake Kivijärvi from high atop the thing at one point (but would by no means call this a scenic route in general) towards Lappeenranta the former highway continues without a bike path, perfectly rideable if a bit boring, towards Kouvola your choices are a series of gravel roads next to the railway (starting with Okkolantie, have to switch sides a few times) or braving the busy highway traffic (would not recommend)

it’s either this or the highway (busy and also extremely boring) here... roadbikeable gravel, with the old asphalt still remaining in a few places (and proper asphalt in Kaipiainen village), no traffic in the west you have to ride on the highway for a little while or take a detour via Mankintie to the north or Metsontie to the south (this road continues a bit further as well but there is no further rideable connection to the highway itself) before the bike path starts, in the east you have to switch to south of the tracks, then back and to the highway between Kaitjärvi and Somerharju and then again to the old road south of the tracks, from Taavetti (Luumäki) on there is a parallel road (with a bike path in many places) to Lappeenranta
