Really good pizza

Patrikkala is a small village in the municipality of Rautjärvi, close to the Russian border, offering a peaceful countryside atmosphere ideal for cyclists looking for quiet roads and scenic views. The terrain is gently rolling with a mix of forest and farmland, and the roads are generally in good condition for trekking and cross bikes. It’s a great spot for those interested in rural life and traditional Finnish landscapes. The nearby lakes and forest trails make it a nice area for a relaxed break or nature walk.

The town is home to the unique Parikkala Sculpture Park, featuring over 500 concrete statues, and Siikalahti Wetland, a popular destination for birdwatching. Additionally, the Parikkala Church, built in the early 19th century, adds to the town’s historical charm.

The kota seems to be property of the local hunting club, but we spend the night without any troubles.

Behind the sauna (which you can reserve through the local yacht club) there is a rowing boat that you can use.

little traffic, rolling hills through the woods, very smooth compacted gravel (very roadbikeable but watch out with the descents) this road runs right next to the Russian border (at a distance of only ~100 m of it for almost 2 km), not that you can really see any of it from the road, but do keep in mind that the border zone that starts right at the side of the road (marked with signs and yellow “Rajavyöhyke” tape in the trees) is only accessible with special permission (so if you need to take a nature call there or something, pull over to the other side of the road instead)

almost 60 km of endless forest with the odd house here and there and little else, little traffic and generally okay-ish asphalt, at least the terrain is variable (though not too hilly, gets a lot hillier just east of here) and in general this is much nicer than the main roads (routes 6 and 14) but just keep in mind that there are no services en route
