2025: The suspension bridge is still closed

Katariina Seaside Park in Kotka is a spacious and versatile coastal park built on historic fortress ruins and a former oil harbour. It offers wide grassy areas, sea views, and various activities like frisbee golf, fitness equipment, and a large Moomin-themed playground. The park is ideal for picnics, with barbecue spots and even Finland’s largest stone picnic table by the sea. Cyclists can enjoy the coastal path connecting it to nearby Sapokka Water Garden, passing lighthouses and a peaceful meditation labyrinth on the way. The park's quality and design have earned it the Green Flag Award, making it a top stop for outdoor lovers.

Kotka National Urban Park is a diverse and fascinating area that combines nature, history, and industrial heritage. The park stretches from the Gulf of Finland’s maritime coast to the Kymijoki River, including green spaces, old fortifications, and architectural landmarks. Cyclists can enjoy scenic coastal routes, forested trails, and riverside paths, passing sites like the Kyminlinna fortress and the Sunila area designed by Alvar Aalto. The park also features historical spots such as the Langinkoski Imperial Fishing Lodge and the former Karhula Glass Factory. With its rich variety of attractions and landscapes, it’s an ideal destination for a full-day cycling adventure.

The hiking trail around Tervajärvi (where järvi means lake in Finnish) winds its way along the partly rocky shoreline, offering easy access to the water, perfect for a refreshing swim, provided the temperature is right.

The Santalahti Nature Trail takes you along narrow paths through a dense forest and then to the open, rocky coast. The view of the sea and the countless small islands is beautiful. However, you should be careful when walking on the rocks, as they can be steep in places and drop sharply into the cold water.

Since the suspension bridge was closed in summer 2024, the ferry is the only alternative for crossing.

The new bridge is closed again because of security issues. How a fin we met at the campfire site told us: “Never ask a Norwegian to build a bridge!”
