There's not much to see here: a pier with a view of Ameland, a ferry, and a not-so-nice restaurant. But it's better to stop here than in the next town, Holwerd: there's nothing there except a Spar supermarket with a coffee machine.

Drawbridge at the city entrance of Dokkum

The location of today's drawbridge on the way to the center of Dokkum was originally one of four gates to the fortress of Dokkum.

On the dike at Holwerd, two enormous women stand gazing out toward the Wadden Sea. One is thin, the other voluptuous. Both women look out over beautiful skies, green salt marshes, and the ever-changing Wadden Sea. And at the travelers arriving and departing for Ameland in the distance. They stand there in fine weather, but also in storms. The two women on the dike at Holwerd are waiting for only one thing: high tide. The two women are made of metal. And they are large—a good five meters tall. If you stretch, you can just touch their outstretched hands. The statues of both women were created by Frisian artist Jan Ketelaar. "Sense of Place: Waiting for High Tide" can be seen from afar.

Peace, vastness, and rugged nature are paramount here. The nature reserve is part of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and covers over 4,200 hectares. Enjoy the green summer polders, colorful salt marshes, and muddy mudflats, or visit the Terp fan de Takomst (Terp of the Future).
