Beautiful little, cozy town center

This "tower-high" scales were built in 1698 for 5,238 gold guilders to replace a simpler weighing station. It illustrates Makkum's importance as a trading center. Many markets were held here, and merchants had their goods weighed and inspected, including meat, butter, and cheese. The square scales are over 24 meters high and resemble a small tower. While this height wasn't functionally necessary, it lent Makkum prestige and prestige.
