The location of today's drawbridge on the way to the center of Dokkum was originally one of four gates to the fortress of Dokkum.

The Dokkumergrootdiep (in Frisian: Dokkumer Grutdjip) and its lower reaches, called the Dokkumerdiep (Frisian: Dokkumer Djip), used to be the connection between the city of Dokkum and the open sea. The grootdiep was a narrow inlet that flowed westward from the Lauwerszee to Dokkum. Even before the first dikes were built, the Dokkumergrootdiep served as the drainage channel for the central part of Oostergo.

Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen is a hamlet in Friesland, known for its historic lock complex and harbor. Designed by Willem de Loré, the complex included a drainage sluice and a navigation lock, which once played a vital role in water management and shipping between the Frisian inland waterway and the Wadden Sea. Although the locks lost their function as sea locks after the damming of the Lauwerszee, they remain important for water drainage and are a national monument.
