The most beautiful part of IJlst lies along the Eegracht and Galamagracht canals. Along these long canals, you'll find beautiful facades and stately houses from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The beautiful, authentic atmosphere that IJlst exudes is largely due to its many historic buildings.

The centuries-old sawmill 'De Rat' is located on the Frisian Geeuw River between the towns of IJlst and Sneek. This mill was built in 1683 but is still in operation today. 'De Rat' means "the rat" in English and specializes in sawing pine, larch, and elm.

This cycle path between Sneek and IJlst passes, among other things, the polder mill de Terpensmole and the sawmill de Rat. Whether it was for pumping away water, sawing wood or grinding grain, mills had an important place in Friesland. Of the 1400 mills that the province used to have, there are still around 130 in operation today.
