What a beautiful area. Fantastic nature. Really recommended. Bring coffee there are plenty of places to sit

It is a surprisingly beautiful area with open nature and lots of water.

The Hanspoort was 1 of the 4 city gates. The gates closed at 22:00, at ten minutes to ten the bell rang (still does) and then people had to go inside. The Hanspoort is mainly known for "The Walloon Fury". In 1572, the army - consisting of Walloons - led by Caspar de Robles invaded Dokkum via this gate: the Walloon Fury. The troops caused terrible havoc, many citizens died. Also 150 years earlier, in 1422, Dokkum was completely destroyed. In this case by an army of a number of Hanseatic cities led by Hamburg, Lübeck and Elburg. This was because Dokkum had made an agreement with pirates. The pirates plundered the ships of the Hanseatic fleet and Dokkum profited from it.

Dokkum really has a lot to offer. You should walk around the old town at least once.

The Tjasker Veenwouden is a polder mill north of the Frisian village of Veenwouden. The paaltjasker was built in the years 1974-1975, at the request of Staatsbosbeheer, after an original model. Unfortunately, the original builder, Roelof Dijksma, died during construction, after which two of his cousins completed the project. The mill was placed in the De Houtwiel nature reserve, north of Veenwouden, but later lost its function. It was subsequently demolished, restored (in 1996) and stored. In 2005, the mill was relocated to the Goddeloze Singel, about 600 meters to the east. The mill is currently not working. The Tjasker Veenwouden is recognized as a municipal monument.
