The castle has an eventful history, with its origins dating back to 1331. Compared to other castles at home and abroad, Dussen Castle is modest in size. But that is precisely why it has a unique charm that many visitors embrace when they enter the courtyard after the bridge and gate. The courtyard is beautifully enclosed by a colonnade from the seventeenth century, which is rare in the northern Netherlands. This creates a romantic and intimate atmosphere. There are weekly guided tours, for both individuals and groups. The costs are €3 for adults and €2 for children. From 1 October to 31 March, a guided tour starts every 2nd Sunday of the month at 14:00 & 15:00. From 1 April to 30 September, a guided tour starts every Sunday at 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00.

Loevestein Castle is located in a unique place, where the Maas and the Waal meet. However, the castle was destroyed during the St. Elizabeth's flood in 1421. It was rebuilt in 1456, but the castle also had an eventful history in the centuries that followed. Beautiful area with many birds. Currently very wet and parts of the walking path are closed. Strolling along the Maas is fun, but now it is swampy.

The fort was built in 1844 on the Waaldijk, it served to protect Gorinchem and to prevent the enemy from moving west. In 1847-1849 a bombproof tower was built on top of the fort. A moat was dug around the tower, after which it could only be reached via a drawbridge. In 1873-1879 the bombproof tower was partly demolished because it was too vulnerable. The top floor was removed and the counterscarp gallery added. The tower fort, counterscarp gallery and barracks provided shelter for up to 420 men and 30 artillery pieces. The fort near Vuren would be used during various mobilizations and suffered a German air attack in 1940. It remained in German hands until the last days before the liberation and would then serve to intern several 'wrong' Dutch people from the region. Source and more information: Wikipedia
