Built in 1826, the church building has an interesting history. You will find large balconies on two sides of the nave. Here the notables and the church people sat downstairs, while the 'polder boys' sat upstairs, for spiritual care during the work on the reclamation of the polders. The Cultuurkerkje arose from the need to preserve a historically important building after the secularisation and merger of the Noord Zijper churches. Since 1982, the Stichting Behoud Kerk Oudesluis has been organizing cultural activities to give the building a new lease of life for the community.

The Amstelmeer is separated from the Wadden Sea by the Amsteldiepdeich, over which the federal road N99 passes. Before the Afsluitdijk (dam) was built, the original lake, Amsteldiep, was the transition between the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee. The Amstelmeer was actually a former inlet of the Wadden Sea. There are various small towns around the Amstelmeer; on the northeast side Westerland and De Haukus and on the southwest side Van Ewijcksluis. The Amstelmeer is now a hot spot for beach lovers, swimmers, surfers, sailors, anglers and bird watchers.
