The old windmills are simply beautiful, even if they are very crowded.

Between Rustenburg and Alkmaar, the Omringdijk was formerly known as the Huigendijk. Until four hundred years ago, the dike was surrounded by water on both sides: the Heerhugowaard and the Schermer were still lakes at that time. They were drained during the Golden Age. Nic Jonk came from a poor farming family and entered the advertising industry at the age of 17. In 1947, he took an evening course at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam. There, his teacher was Wessel Couzijn, who encouraged him to continue. One day a week, he continued his drawing studies at the Rijksnormaalschool (National Normal School), also in Amsterdam. In 1949, he attended the first Sonsbeek exhibition in Sonsbeek, Arnhem. As a result, he decided to focus on sculpture. In 1953, he finally enrolled at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (National Academy of Fine Arts). Three years later, disappointed with the program, he quit and started his own business. From 1961 to 1962, Nic Jonk taught at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch. Afterwards, together with Wessel Couzijn and Mari Andriessen, among others, he founded Ateliers '63, where he also taught until 1966. He made the design for the first (1964) Colombina and Arlecchino, theatre prizes of the VSCD.[1] In the 1974-1975 academic year he also taught briefly at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. In 1965 he settled with his wife, poet Greet Jonk-Commandeur, and six children in Grootschermer, where he set up a sculpture park.
