Beautiful museum about the origin and drainage of the Haarlemmermeer

The Waterwolf is a reminder of the lake that was here before the Haarlemmermeer existed. It was a wild lake and due to storms and peat excavations it became increasingly larger and more dangerous. Many villages disappeared in the waves during storms. In 1852 the lake was drained and the Haarlemmermeerpolder was created. The statue is 20 m long and 6 m high, made by Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart. 20 tons of steel, hundreds of meters of welding and many, many hours of work. There is no other way to describe it than a mega project. But both the artist duo responsible (Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart) and the builders of the structure did a good job. The work of art is now 100% finished, including lettering and a loudspeaker that makes quiet running water trickle when you stand in front of the lettering. The work was made of Corten steel and has now taken on the typical rust-brown color. The Water Wolf is not a random name. It is, among other things, the nickname of the Haarlemmermeer before it was reclaimed because the wild lake devoured large areas of land in the 16th and 17th centuries as if it were a greedy wolf. For example, the villages of Vijfhuizen, Nieuwerkerk and Rietwijk once fell victim to the Water Wolf.

The bulb fields in the Netherlands have been the calling card of the bulb region for over 400 years. The excavated dunes and the healthy sea air have just the right ingredients to allow bulbs to grow optimally and create the most colorful landscape in the world every spring. The flower season starts in 2024 on Saturday March 21 and lasts until Sunday May 12. Every spring, many visitors come from all over the world to enjoy the color palette of the blooming tulip fields. The world-famous Keukenhof flower park and the annual Bollenstreek flower parade are popular, but there are also many beautiful small flower attractions and events to visit.
