Landgoed Vilsteren is a living landscape where nature, agriculture and history come together with Huis Vilsteren as the core of the centre. On this estate time seems to have stood still and you can visit farms, but also a village that lies in the middle of it.

Old lock in the Vechte near Vilsteren which is still completely hand-operated. The opening of the gates and the letting of water in and out are done with hand cranks. Ideal place to take a break and watch the locks.

The Vilsteren weir was built after the length of the Overijsselse Vecht was reduced from 90 to 60 kilometers at the end of the 19th century. The weirs served to prevent high areas from drying out and low areas from flooding. Next to the dam is a fish ladder that provides a spectacle during the spawning period: spawning fish can bridge a height difference of 1.5 meters thanks to the fish ladder.

Pass under the rhododendrons and then up the stairs. Then you run into the hermitage. At Christmas there is the living nativity scene. You have to buy tickets for that.
