Beautiful walk along the Almelo - Nordhorn Canal

Cozy square in the center of Almelo. During my visit it was full of colorful tulips, which made for a cheerful atmosphere. Nice place for lunch, with shops and restaurants within walking distance.

The Koornmarkt has traditionally been the centre of the city. Until well into the 19th century, the market took place here where farmers and craftsmen offered their goods. On the spot where the HEMA is now, there used to be two water mills. A mill stream that ran along the old town hall, now a narrow street, provided the water supply from the former mill pond behind it. In the middle of the 19th century, both mills were demolished. However, the mill stream only disappeared around 1960. Next to the HEMA is café Bar Biertje, formerly known as 't Botervat. This name dates back to the 18th century and is still used by many Almelo residents to refer to this building. The current Art Nouveau facade of the building dates from 1913, when it had to be rebuilt after a fierce fire. It was designed by the architect J. Wolff.
