Hannes made the news in 2004 because he escaped from the zoo in Nordhorn, Germany. Hannes was fished out of the Vecht near Dalfsen and taken to the seal sanctuary in Pieterburen. Hannes was then supposed to be taken back to the zoo in Nordhorn, but was released into the Wadden Sea by strangers.
