The cultivation and trade of extremely valuable tulips began in the Netherlands after Carolus Clusius brought tulips from Turkey to Europe in 1593. During the Dutch Golden Age, tulip bulbs became an object of speculation. In the 1630s, prices for tulip bulbs rose to comparatively extremely high levels before the market collapsed abruptly in early February 1637 (= the first relatively well-documented speculative bubble in economic history). (Source: Wikipedia) THE TULIP: It came to Europe from Persia and Turkey in the 16th century. The Netherlands, especially Leiden, became the center of tulip cultivation. The "Semper Augustus" became particularly valuable because a virus caused it to have unique red and white flame patterns on its petals. During the tulip mania around 1643, it was recorded as the most expensive tulip in the world (Collection of the Norton Simon Art Foundation, USA). It is unknown who bred the Semper Augustus, as it is a historical, now extinct specimen. However, it became a symbol of the Dutch "tulip mania" (nl = tulpenwoede, tulpengekte) in the 17th century. At its peak in 1637, one bulb of this variety fetched 10,000 guilders, exactly the price of a house on a canal. In 1624, there were only 12 of this variety. 🌿🌱After the founding of Leiden University in 1575, it seemed sensible to establish a "hortus medicus," a herb garden where medical students could study medicinal plants. This marked the beginning of a development that continued at the LUMC Academic Hospital and the Bio Science Park. The "Hortus Botanicus Leiden" was established in 1590, making it the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands. 🌷Carolus CLUSIUS, a Hortulanus from Vienna, was the first director of the garden in 1593. He oversaw its design and cultivated the first large tulip collections in Europe. These form the basis of the nearby Keukenhof in Lisse, the "Garden of Leiden." ☘In the 19th century, Philipp Franz von SIEBOLD introduced around 700 previously unknown plants from Japan and China. Beautiful view of the spot where the Oude Rijn flows into the sea. The wind, currents, and tides change the view every day.

It's beautiful there, but I wouldn't go on April 12 because of the crowds and road closures for the flower parade.

Keukenhof Castle The estate of Keukenhof Castle is larger than that of the famous flower park. It consists of various gardens, each with its own appearance. There is also a large forest area where the old dunes are still visible.

The Keukenhof flower park is world famous for the many tulips that bloom in spring. What many people don't know is that the flower park is part of a much larger estate, namely the Keukenhof Castle Estate, and that this estate has beautiful castle gardens that can be visited free of charge all year round. The Keukenhof Castle Estate has more than two hundred hectares of forest, meadows and beautifully landscaped castle gardens. More than eighteen monuments can be found in the historical area. While strolling through the beautiful gardens you will come across many works of art that make every walk special.

The castle is very difficult to reach during the flower parade weekend. In 2024 this will be April 20 and 21.

Located away from the Keukenhof, it is a pleasant relaxation to walk through the almost deserted castle park. The Kasteel and the Landgoed are also worth seeing.

If you love a Phantasialand without rides but the same rush of people, this is the right place for you. Crowds of people literally running over each other in front of the tulip exhibitions and extremely overcrowded parking spaces. If you like that, fine. A little tip for others: go in as soon as the courtyard opens, because it gets really crowded from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Otherwise also go to the places in the area. They also have tulip attractions and are not overcrowded.

For lovers of tulips and endless expanses of flowers, a visit to Keukenhof is a "must do". Keukenhof in a few figures, it is 32 hectares of flowers, 7 million bulbs arranged according to a theme that changes every year, and 1.4 million visitors in a few weeks. As this park is only open a few weeks a year, I recommend that you book your tickets in advance and visit it outside of peak days. All the information here: https://keukenhof.nl/fr/

About 100 court suppliers are responsible for the fact that every year bulb flowers - such as daffodils, hyacinths, imperial crowns - can be seen in Keukenhof, which thrive well in the sandy and calcareous soil.[5] Traditionally, the main theme is tulips, of which 4,500,000 bulbs are planted by hand in 100 variations each year. A total of around seven million flower bulbs are planted each year in the 30 flower shows. The 32-hectare park with 2,500 trees in 87 varieties is criss-crossed by 15 kilometers of footpaths and has seven inspiration gardens with garden ideas for visitors. In addition, the Keukenhof is also a large sculpture park with 150 works by 50 artists. The main flowering period depends on the respective weather conditions. It is usually in the middle of April. According to Keukenhof, around 1.4 million people visit Keukenhof during the eight weeks that it is open each year.
