We visited the great beach of Hoek van Holland during our Christmas holiday in the Netherlands. Hoek van Holland is a district of Rotterdam, but has retained the character of a small coastal town and seaside resort. It is located in South Holland at the main mouth of the Rhine into the North Sea.

The Haringvliet Dam with the Haringvliet locks are hydraulic structures with which the mouth of the Haringvliet in the Netherlands is closed as part of the Delta Works. The entire project consists of 17 locks, a large section of dam and a ship lock, and was the sixth project within the Delta Works.

Goedereede is definitely worth a visit! Goedereede is a historic city with many special features. For example, it received city rights in 1312, the only Dutch pope lived here and the city was an important transit port for Porto during the Roman Empire.

A very nice, cozy and worth seeing small place with a beautiful windmill. When you climb the church tower you have an incredible all-round view.

The village of Hoek van Holland, as a sub-municipality of Rotterdam also known as 'Rotterdam aan Zee', was only created during the construction of the Nieuwe Waterweg. The site of the current 'Zuidelijk Strandcentrum' used to be the barracks of the earthworkers who did the excavation work for the canal. After its completion in 1872, they continued to live in their original camp and found work in horticulture or provided the heavy, unskilled labor in building the harbour. Watchtower near Ouddorp. From the height you have a beautiful view of the dune landscape and in good weather you can even see the harbor cranes of the Rotterdam Maasvlakte.

Bicycle path on one of the Dutch Delta Works. The 4.5 kilometer long dam is protected against high water. Good luck with the headwind!
